How Does the AI Token Counter Work?
Our free AI Token Counter uses an estimation algorithm based on the BPE (Byte Pair Encoding) tokenization method used by most large language models. When you type or paste your prompt, the tool instantly calculates the approximate number of tokens, estimates the API cost for your selected model, and shows how much of the context window your prompt uses.
Tokens are the fundamental units that AI models process. A token can be a word, part of a word, or even a single character. On average, 1 token ≈ 4 characters or ≈ 0.75 words in English.
Why Token Counting Matters
Every AI model has a maximum context window — the total number of tokens it can process in a single conversation. If your prompt exceeds this limit, the model will truncate your input or return an error. By checking token counts before sending API calls, you can optimize prompts, reduce costs, and ensure complete responses.
Supported AI Models
This tool supports token estimation for the most popular AI models in 2026, including OpenAI's GPT-4o and GPT-4o Mini, Anthropic's Claude Opus and Claude Sonnet, Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Meta's Llama 3.3.
Tips to Reduce Token Usage
- Be concise — remove unnecessary filler words and repetitive instructions
- Use bullet points instead of long paragraphs for complex instructions
- Avoid restating context the AI already has in the conversation
- Use system prompts efficiently — set the role once, not in every message
- Chunk large documents into smaller sections for processing
